The Karate Kid (2010) - Movie review, by Jo Piantavinha

Have you ever seen The Karate Kid (2010)

When I first saw Karate Kid in 1984, I was an 11 years-old girl. In that first version, Ralph Macchio was Daniel Larusso, and the unforgettable actor Pat Morita was Mr. Kesuke Miaygi.
Just like any kid and teenager in the 80's, I really loved the movie and saw it many times! And, like every girl then, I fell in love with "Daniel San"... Lol... So, because of my sweet memories, I didn't expect much about this new version.
Last week, when the movie came out, my 12 years-old son and me went to the movie to see Will Smith's son as the new "karate kid". When the movie started I felt completely involved with the plot. Then, I found I was completely wrong... The movie is really amazing!!!
Jaden Smith, who plays Dre, is more than a talented and world famous actor's son. Jaden has his own bright. He is a cutie talented 12 years-old actor who shares the scenes with a movie legend, Jackie Chan. In the movie, Jackie Chan plays a reclusive handyman, Mr. Han, who teaches the boy the art of Kung-fu.
I have no words to describe the performance of both. The acting chemistry they share is quite extraordinary. It's really passionate watch them!
Also, it's truly fascinating to watch snooty and rambunctious Dre transform into a confident warrior, and the charismatic Smith and expert Chan build a believably tender and touching surrogate father-son relationship.
The only curious thing about the movie is, in spite of its title, Karate Kid, Dre actually learns Kung-fu.
I really recommend it!
Run to the movie and have fun!
See you,
Josete

  1. Josete,

I don't completely share your opinion of this movie. The original Karate Kid is a classic film, and it shouldn't have been remade. Since it has, I will give my opinions.
It was a good decision to cast Jaden Smith as the star. He is a decent actor, and has good comedic timing. He is the spitting image of his father. For future projects, he will have to establish his own acting identity. Jackie Chan without question was the right choice to play the Martial arts instructor.
As a practitioner of the Martial arts myself, I found the fight scenes to be quite silly, and unrealistic. In martial art tournaments, children do not fight without pads and safety equipment. Most adults don't.
What mother do you know would allow her child to be kicked and punched repeatedly in the face and body without equipment? This would cause serious injury or death. I know it's "just a movie" but if one is going to display Martial art, then one should display it correctly and accurately. It also takes years to become a Black belt or Black sash in a discipline. The notion that Dre was ready to fight a seasoned Martial artist that has trained for years in Kung-fu is absurd.
The title Karate kid is inappropriate because the fighting style used in the movie is Kung-Fu. Kung-Fu has many styles and I found it odd that we were never told what style of Kung Fu was being taught to Dre. Isn't Dre the Kung-Fu kid?
If you want to do the right thing, buy the DVD of the original Karate kid and watch that with the kids. I'm sure Mr. Miyagi would appreciate it.

  2. Attention Brazilian students,

I was recently in Rio. I learned that it's very important to pick a Brazilian football team to support. I want all of you to consider supporting my favorite American football team. This team is the Chicago Bears. It is one of the oldest American Football teams. It would be great to know that there are supporters in Brazil! Thanks much!
