Wish Clauses




We use

"I wish

to express 

regret 

or 

dissatisfaction


FOR THE PRESENT AND FUTURE

We use

"I WISH" + PAST SIMPLE OR PAST CONTINUOUS 

I wish I had more money

I wish I weren't working at this moment


FOR THE FUTURE

Showing that it is not likely to happen

We use

"I WISH" + CONDITIONAL

I wish I would go to England next summer


FOR THE PAST

We use

"I WISH" + PAST PERFECT

I wish I had studied more for the exam

I wish I hadn't lied to my friend


IF THE WISH IS A GOOD ONE

We use

"I HOPE" + PRESENT SIMPLE OR WILL

I hope you feel well

I hope the war will stop soon


IF THE WISH IS ABOUT DOING SOMETHING DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE

We use

I WISH I COULD...

I wish I could hear it

I wish I could pass this subject


WE CAN REPLACE I WISH WITH IF I ONLY  FOR EMPHASIS

If only I hadn't watched that film

If only I could speak English well
